This paper proposes a novel polarization division multiplexing system based on polar orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (P-OFDM) with subcarriers interlaced. In the transmitter, each polarization is designed to bear data only on sub-carriers with even- or odd-index, respectively. Therefore, the migration from each polarization to the other is avoided effectively.
In the receiver, independent channel estimation and equalization modules are adopted to recover the signal for each polarization, lowering the computational complexity to great extent. Compared with the single polarization (SP) system, the proposed PDM system shares the similar performance at the SNR expense of only 1.74dB for reaching the bit error rate threshold of forward error correction.
